Hi everyone.
Welcome To www.Expression-Web-Tutorial.com For Beginners. These tutorials are created specifically for you, the beginner.
When I first started learning EW in 2007, I found there was a huge lack of down to earth, simple, easy to follow tutorials and 'how to's" for learning Expression Web (abbreviated as EW). However, there were a few good ones.
One Forum and web site that helped me the most when I was new to Expression Web is http://www.expression-web-designer-help.com/forum/ which is managed by jimd, a Microsoft MVP. It was Jims video tutorials that taught me about the fundamentals of using Expression Web and CSS.
Why did I start www.expression-web-tutorial.com? Because there were so few resources in the early days of Expression Web, and because so few resources catered especially to the Beginner.
I remember how much I struggled as a Beginner. However, because of that struggle you now have a resource that is aimed at helping you....the beginner.
I am reminded every day how difficult it was to learn a new software program such as Expression Web. This keeps me grounded. It keeps me focused on the special needs all beginners have.
Those needs include step by step instructions that start at the beginning...and not somewhere in the middle. I try to never assume you know what I know. That is really hard sometimes. I think those with experience forget what it was like at the beginning. It's easy to assume everyone knows what 'you' [the experienced EW user] know.
Does that make sense? I hope so. Furthermore, most of this process of assuming is subconscious. The experienced person is not completely, if at all, aware that they are making these assumptions. Yet, it impacts the newcomer negatively.
I work very hard to make sure not to assume you, the beginner, know something when you really don't. So, when I make tutorials, written or video, I really have to make sure I include all the necessary steps. I mean all of them. This is a challenge, yet I know you appreciate this.
I hope you will find learning Expression Web a little easier with these tutorials. If you don't find what you need, request a tutorial. If you would like to contribute a tutorial, contact me via email. I welcome all contributions, requests, and suggestions.
While I hesitate to reveal personal information, for one reason or the other, I do feel I need to tell you just a bit about me and what led me to where I am today.
My name is Kelly L. and I am, or was, a Registered Nurse prior to becoming a Freelance Designer and Teacher. I really like teaching and helping others. That's why I became a nurse (obviously!). I also loved a challenge, otherwise, I was so terribly bored.
I live in the US. I earned my BSN Nursing in 1997 and BA Psychology in 1991 from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. I worked on a cardiac step down unit, which I found to be rewarding, both personally and economically. The leader in me sought out a management position after one year of working at the same Hospital, and I remained in management for about 6-7 years.
Unfortunately, I had an operation that left me disabled. This led to several other surgeries to repair the damage. Yet, I would never be the same. My life has been turned upside down, inside out, and has been the challenge of a life-time. I would not wish this upon my worst enemy. (Which is good because I don't have any enemies, that I can think of!!)
I have good days and bad days. My physical limitations prevent me from being on my feet for extended periods of time (like 15 minutes!). So it was easy for me to fall in love with the internet. I had the time and I needed the extra money.
Physically limited or not, I still plug away at whatever I do. That includes helping others like yourself. I spend every day working on something web related. Some days it might be tutoring and consulting. Other days I am making videos and burning DVDs, or working on web design projects. I also spend a lot of time writing. It might be articles for other web sites I own, but mainly right now I am writing my book, Expression Web 3 Tutorials, No Non-Sense Tutorials for Beginners. (haven't nailed down the final title)
In the end, I suppose you could say it was my tragedy that led me to where I am today. I have no idea what the future holds and I don't care. I have learned to live in the moment because the moment is all I have to be concerned with. No more futuristic thinking. Success is meant for today, not tomorrow.
Family: I have two fabulous children: one in college, the other in high school. (where has the time gone!!) They grew up way too fast.
I also have a pug, Faith. She is the best dog ever! Such a loveable creature. She's always by my side while I work on web sites, etc.
Dislikes: I really don't like rude or mean people. The internet has made a way for people to think they can say whatever they want to other people. The lack of face-to-face contact brings out the worst in people. I hesitated when I set up my Forum. Forums can be notorious for verbal abuse and rudeness. (I am also very limited on the amount of time I can spend on the forum! Since starting the forum, I have become very busy.)
That's why I have a no tolerance policy. Everyone must treat others with respect, kindness, and humbleness. There is no room for egos or mean people. A forum is meant to help, not hurt. I will NOT hesitate to ban anyone who disrespects others in any way. Period.
I seek to create a safe and nurturing environment for newcomers to ask questions and get the help they need. If someone is a smart alec or downright mean, the beginner will likely not return and become disheartened. Now, if you are a veteran web developer reading this thinking 'awe, sissies', .....then you are someone that should not show up on my forum. Ever. I am appalled at how the veteran can be so damn nasty. You are not welcomed here.
(Ironically, in the field of Nursing it is quite common for nurses to "eat their young". In other words, the experienced nurse treats the new nurse with harshness and sometimes cruelty. That is what I have seen in the Forums on the internet!! That is what I will not tolerate on my forum. It's wrong, it's unprofessional and it's my biggest dislike ever.)
Moving on.....
To All Beginners, Welcome and Best Wishes for a Successful Adventure in Web Design with Expression Web!
