How to Publish a Web Site with Expression Web 2  with FTP

Expression Web 3 Tutorials

FTP = File Transfer Protocol

Expression Web is versatile in that you can publish a web site in a few different ways.  The two most common ways include:

  1. FPSEs -- FrontPage Server Extensions
  2. FTP -- File Transfer Protocol

The other Publishing options include:  WebDav and File System

Don't forget to take a look at 'What I need before publishing a web site".

Which method of publishing is recommended?

Typically, it doesn't matter which method you choose.  However, FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSEs) may not be around at some point in the future.  But, FTP is likely to be available indefinitely.  FTP is a very common method used to publish files to a server.

Here's an issue to consider........

There may be situations in which FPSEs could interfere with certain 'things' you'd like to do.  For instance, I recently needed to password protect one of my directories on my server.  This method requires .httaccess files and other related files.  I had some difficulties setting this up because of the FPSEs.  To avoid a hassle and keep things simple, I just uninstalled the FPSEs and went with the FTP to publish.

If I publish my site with FPSEs, and then my hosting company decides to stop supporting the Extensions, can I then use FTP to publish?

Yes.  There should be no problem publishing via an FTP connection should your hosting company decide to terminate support for FPSEs.

Personally, I published some of my sites with FPSEs and others with the FTP.  There is nothing wrong with using FPSEs and it's up to you. (Advanced users will likely run into more complicated situations that require something completely different.  So bare in mind, this conversation is for Beginners.)

Host Unlimited Domains on 1 Account

This Tutorial Explains How to Publish a web site to Hostmonster using Expression Web from Microsoft"

1.  First, you need to set up an ftp account with your hosting service.  Keeping in line with Hostmonster, this is done in your c-panel by clicking on the "FTP Accounts" icon.

Follow the directions and set up the ftp.   It's very intuitive.  However, if you have difficulty, do not hesitate to call Hostmonster.  They are incredibly helpful and will guide you in setting up the ftp.

ftp

Once you have set up your ftp account, you can publish you web site from within Expression Web.

With Expression Open and Your Web Site folder Open, do the following:

1.  Click   File >  Publish Web site

2.  The Remote Site Dialog box opens.  [see below]  Choose FTP, and type in ftp.yoursite.com .  Enter the ftp directory location:  usually public_html. If you don't specify the correct directory, you won't see your pages after you publish them.

ftp

Arrow 1:  choose the ftp option

Arrow 2:  type in ftp.your domain name.com.  No, it's not a typo in the photo above.  EW adds the ftp:// in front of ftp. your website. com.

Arrow 3:  Type in the directory you will publish the files to.

** This is usually public_html.

However, please check with your hosting provider because some providers have different settings.

[However, if it's a sub-domain, then check inside cpanel, ftp account settings.  Typically, just add the sub-domain name to the end:  public_html/subdomain ]

Ex:  public_html/clients  where clients is the sub-domain.

 3.  Click Ok

4.  You will be asked for your username and password.  Use your original user name and password.  (NOTE:  I had some difficulty with this the first time, and I ended up just using my original username and password -- the username and password from your main account)

If you have difficulty with the above tutorial, be patient and try again.    I know it took me a few tries the first time using the ftp.  So be patient, double check your settings, and if need be, call hostmonster.

And make NOTE:  You Do NOT Need any other FTP client for publishing.  Expression Web is all you need.  I also recommend that you use Expression Web for publishing.  Plus, take advantage of the tools that come with EW.  You can check for broken links, unused CSS styles, and so much more.
